Sozosei · Case Study 04
From characters
Mei-Lah and Lio began as illustrated characters. The next question was simple: what happens when they start to move?
01 · Character
Personality, held still.
Every expression Mei-Lah and Lio need already exists in the illustration — line, proportion, colour, attitude. Motion has to earn its place on top of that, not invent a new version of them.
02 · Motion
First movement.
The first movement was deliberately simple: preserve the illustration, then let gesture give the characters a life of their own.

From characters
to a living world.
Character Animation · World-Building · Digital Storytelling
Mei-Lah and Lio step off the page — into motion, a built environment, and a world made to be explored and shared.
01 / CHARACTER
Personality in motion.
Drawing established who Mei-Lah and Lio were. Movement gave them behaviour — how they react, how they communicate, and how their personalities play against one another.
REACTION
A character doesn't need to say much.
A glance, a pause, a change in expression — small movements became another layer of character.
One character can react.
Two characters can respond.
INTERACTION
Personality isn't only how a character moves.
It's how one character responds to another.
Movement created behaviour.
The next step was giving it somewhere to exist.
02 / WORLD
Building somewhere for them to go.
Movement gave Mei-Lah and Lio behaviour. Building a world around them turned that behaviour into a journey — somewhere to enter, explore and move through together.
DEPARTURE
Somewhere to go.
The journey begins in Singapore, with the city moving behind them and a destination ahead.
SINGAPORE SENTOSA
EN ROUTE
ARRIVAL
A world to enter.
Nova World SG · Sentosa
A world is more than a background.
It gives movement somewhere to lead — and gives the characters something to discover, respond to and experience together.
DISCOVERY
BANANA BLAST
Places became encounters.
The environments weren't simply scenery. Each one created a new situation for Mei-Lah and Lio to move through together.
WONDER

IMMERSION
From looking at the world to moving through it.
RETURN
Every journey needs a way home.

WATCH THE FULL JOURNEYCHARACTER → WORLD
A world had taken shape.
But it didn't have to remain illustrated.
03 / BETWEEN WORLDS
The illustrated world didn't have to end at its edges. By carrying Mei-Lah and Lio into filmed environments, motion became a way of connecting their visual language with the city around them.
THE CROSSING
The characters stayed illustrated.
The world around them changed.
The same journey continued — but the environment moved from something drawn to somewhere real.
Crossing the boundary was only the beginning.
The next step was learning how the characters could exist within the real environment itself.
IN PLACE
Not placed over the world.
Placed within it.
Scale, movement and timing were shaped around the live environment, allowing Mei-Lah and Lio to remain unmistakably illustrated while feeling present within the scene.
ILLUSTRATION → ENVIRONMENT
The world became bigger than the illustration.
Once Mei-Lah and Lio could move between drawn and real environments, motion was no longer limited to telling their story. It could become something people could use, send and share.
Motion became more than a way of telling Mei-Lah and Lio's story. It became something people could download, send and use in their own conversations.
THE PACK
Designed to be used, not just watched.
Each animation was built as a small expressive response — recognisable at a glance, readable at messaging scale, and made to bring the characters and visual language of Singapore into everyday conversation.
THE COMPLETE SET
Twelve ways to say Singapore.
Characters, landmarks, food and familiar symbols became a small animated language made for everyday conversation.
